Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is a flowering plant of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), the roots of which are used in cooking and traditional medicine. It is a herbaceous, perennial plant native to the Indian subcontinent and South East Asia. It requires temperatures of 20-30 degrees centigrade and a considerable amount of rainfall to thrive. The rhizomes are gathered each year: some are used to propagate and the rest is used for consumption. It has dull yellow flowers and oblong leaves. The thick rhizome is yellowish on the outside and deep orange or reddish brown inside. The rhizomes have been used in food and medicinal preparations for thousands of years.
It is used in curry powders and is a warm spice with a slightly bitter flavour. In the traditional Ayurvedic medical system it is a well-recognised treatment for numerous conditions and is a powerful supplement for animals when used in combination with other ingredients. It promotes cleansing, detoxification, mobility and comfort.
